Ask London or Maddie, Rex or me what’s the best new thing our family did last year and you’ll get a consistent answer (complete with whoop whoop): being a part of the Mendham Minor League Softball Champion Yankees.  We watched the Yankees come together as a team over the spring season after they started out lookin’ like the Bad News Bears.  And while it was great to win the playoffs and take home the trophies, there is no doubt that the girls would have been champions in our eyes whether they had won or lost. When my mom became ill, hearing about the girls’ softball triumphs was one of her great joys until she passed away in June (after the championship was ours), and watching my girls play softball was one of the few things that helped me to keep it together during a really rough time.  Even little Maddie, who played for the Mets in the instructional league for the first time last year and was an honorary member of London’s Yankee team, will tell you that softball changed her life.  This year, both of my girls will be playing on the same team of 3rd and 4th graders, and I have committed to taking my balls out of my purse and the glove and cleats out of my closet and steppin’ up as an assistant coach (instead of just their loudest fan)…

Rex tells anyone who will listen that he hasn’t had so much fun since he was a 12-year-old playing Little League baseball….which brings me to my point:  come out and join us this year.  When it’s 15 degrees outside, I know it’s hard to think past March Madness…but spring training is right around the corner and we need to be ready, even though Andy Pettitte can’t decide whether or not to retire and the major league New York Yankees haven’t figured out their pitching rotation. So register now and mark your calendar with one of these two important dates:

Mendham Little League will hold two evaluation sessions for the 2011 season.

Boys who played in either the Mendham Little League major league or junior league in 2010 do not have to be evaluated.
